After the Bust

Looking to the Future

Mexico’s future depends on U.S. economy

Posted by admin On March - 13 - 2009

It’s easy to point to Mexico and make comments about how bad things are getting there. Violence is on the increase and radio and TV personalities are bashing the Country for the government’s lack of control. The fact of the matter is that Mexico is tanking because of our problems here in the States. They derive a great deal of income and stability from the United States. When we stop buying, stop traveling, stop hiring and stop investing, Mexico pays a price.

Since our short-term prospects look bleak, especially with regard to the auto industry on which much of Mexico’s industrial base is dependent, it is not hard to predict that Mexico’s short-term future will bring even more negative economic results and more social upheaval. Our economy is so closely tied to Mexico’s economy that it is reasonable to assume that as long as we continue to have problems with unemployment, tight credit and general market instability, Mexico will suffer from the same. If our unemployment reaches 10%, Mexican unemployment will similarly soar.

What it means for those of us looking to the “end of days” or the end of the current recession / depression is that Mexico will continue to be our dark shadow, the one that follows our every move. When things get brighter for us, Mexico will benefit from that change. The longer it takes to turn things around here, the more likely it is that Mexico will continue on its current course.

I’ve traveled to Mexico a few times in recent years, and it feels strange to hear the travel advisories against the country, whether they’re official or not.

I think that the discussion about legalizing some drugs to destroy the illegal economy is a very interesting conversation. Maybe legalizing Marijuana would be a good move, but I’m sure the drug cartels would adjust to something else quite quickly.

Dark shadow huh? I guess so… Didn’t think about it until now when you mentioned it actually. So Mexico suffers the way we does.

Mexico City in particular is taking a hit financially as well because of the swine flu. The timing of this could really make their economic situation even worse. And then there was the recent earthquake – I guess that could have been much worse than it was.

Mexico City is experiencing bad year this time. I think, all countries do feel the economic crisis, right? These situations are beyond our control and our future cannot be predicted. Good thing the United States is there to support them.

My point was that our depression is going to be their depression, and our turnaround will be theirs as well.

Is it right for a country to depend so heavily for it’s survival on it’s neighbor or some other country? Why can’t Mexico develop it’s economy independent of US. Being a border country, trade with US will always be more advantageous and easy but they should not put all their eggs in one basket.

Well, for me, as what is commonly happening to us, we depend to our neighbor country every time we encountered problems. Do you think it’s just alright? Of course, some would answer yes/no. Anyway, it’s only a matter of helping each other, but we also have to try or best to improved our economy. The question now is, how are we going to improve our economy?
